The Hub, Regents Park
This innovative facility is located at the centre of the sports fields in the Northern Parkland of Regent’s Park. Clusters of changing rooms are submerged in a mound. Above the changing rooms is a circular cafe that exploits the 360° views to surrounding pitches. This contemporary design is sympathetic to Nash’s concept for buildings to be seen as “ornaments in the landscape.” Regent’s Park is Grade I listed and therefore obtaining planning permission could have been an issue. 90% of the floor area of this building is underneath the earth mound, reducing the impact on the landscape visually. The mound is created from rubble of the previous building, reducing the amount of landfill considerably. It also provides the environmental benefit of thermal mass reducing heating and cooling requirements inside the building. A borehole is employed to provide water for the building.
